X-ray Diffraction Methods

1. A particular crystal has a set of parallel layers at a d-spacing of 8.50 Å.  At what angle does the X-ray beam have to be placed to obtain a diffraction peak using copper Kα radiation (1.542 Å).

2.  (a)     The first order diffraction peak occurs at 2θ = 13.0o for a crystalline powder when the radiation is CuKα, λ = 1.542 Å.  What is the d-spacing for the set of planes giving rise to this peak?

         (b)     Do the same calculation using MoKα radiation, λ = 0.7101 Å but keep the angle the same.

         (c)     Use the same d-spacing calculated in part (a).  At what angle would the peak occur for this spacing if the radiation is MoKα?

         (d)    Rationalize the results obtained in parts (b) and (c).
