Write relevant title that captures what you think is essence

Homework

For this homework, you will practice writing a mini poetry analysis essay. You may choose the poem you analyzed on the Google Doc, choose a poem somebody else analyzed, or compare and contrast two poems (we talked in last meeting recording about how a comparison between the two Shakespeare sonnets would make a great essay and there are several others you could use to make fabulous comparisons. For your mini essay to be considered complete, you should include the following:

I. An appealing and relevant title that captures what you think is the essence of your piece

II. An introduction that introduces the issue (what you decided your poem is most about and why it is important) for your reader and then introduces the writer's full name and poem.

III. A thesis (your overall argument about the point/purpose of the poem and what you think about it and why)--you have to use the work you did to identify that point and purpose in the Google doc. See my comments on your analyses to help you work out what I thought you were saying the point might be if it wasn't already clear. Your thesis can come at the end of your introduction or anywhere else in the mini essay.

IV. A couple paragraphs where you use quotes from the poem to help you develop your thesis. Make sure you use MLA format and the original source for your poem on that Google doc and that you separate multiple poetic lines with forward slashes if you quote more than one line in your quote. For example: In the final quatrain of the sonnet, while he continues to undermine the tradition of romantic hyperbole, Shakespeare also makes a particularly feminist move. He changes his female love object from an object to a speaking subject and emphasizes he loves to hear her speak, "I love to hear her speak, yet well I know/That music hath a far more pleasing sound." He also goes on to emphasize her active grounded presence: "I grant I never saw a goddess go;/My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground" (Shakespeare).

V. A conclusion where you drive home the point of your poem for your reader and why it might matter to them, what's so important about it or what you think we should take away from it and why.

VI. An in-depth response to at least one of your classmates where you identify what you think is strong or what you like about their work and where/how they could make their analysis even stronger, make their thesis clearer, work even more effectively with the quotes, their conclusion more powerful, etc.

Format your homework according to the give formatting requirements:

1. The answer must be double spaced, typed, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.

2. The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the homework, the course title, the student's name, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.

3. Also include a reference page. The references and Citations should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
