This is a group assignment. The following learning outcomes will be assessed:
- Write a basic academic research paper of about 5000 words.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the process of conducting a literature review, justifying the research topic and choice of methodology, analysing, presenting and discussion their findings.
- Demonstrate correct use of referencing and citation skills.
The Assignment
In science, the primary source of knowledge is from past and current observations and research experiments using the scientific method. The scientific method is the only scientific way accepted to back up a theory or idea. This is the method on which all research projects should be based. The outlet for sharing the results of experiments is scientific research journal articles. There are TWO (2) central tasks for this assignment.
Task 1 - Evaluation [30 marks]
Your task is to locate, print (or photocopy) and read a scientific research journal article on a topic related to either one of the topic (i) IoT (Internet of Thing) (ii) Big Data. After reading the paper, write a short report that addresses the following issues:
Problem addressed - What is the main research problem addressed in the article?
Type of research: What type of research is this? Qualitative or Quantitative?
Prior research - Briefly discuss the body of literature that is used to motivate the research. You will need to review some of the key articles referenced by the authors. Identify any shortcomings in the prior literature that the selected article addresses. Perform a literature search to determine if there are any relevant articles that have not been cited by the authors.
Significance - Explain why you think that the article makes a significant contribution to the field. Cite references wherever possible to establish that there is a consensus among researchers that the problem addressed in the article is indeed an important one. Discuss whether the contribution is in the area of the methodology used for the study.
Methodology - Discuss the methodology used for the study.
Contributions - Summarize the significant results and contributions made by the authors.
Further research - Identify possible areas in which the research can be extended. Does the article call for further research on any specific issue? Identify limitations of the article and formulate them as potential research questions.
Task 2 - Writing a Journal Article
Your second task is to write a high quality scholarly research paper on the topic you selected for your literature search in Task 1. You must have at least 10 references from peer-reviewed journals. The research paper must follow APA style for citations and references. Other styles are not accepted and deduction will be made for non-use or incorrect use of APA.
