RHETORICAL ANALYSIS PERSUASIVE PROJECT ASSIGNMENT

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this assignment is to analyze with care and in great detail one public speech and write an argument about the quality of the speech.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Choose a speaker and a speech you would like to analyze. It must be a speech. In other words, a press conference or a late night monologue won't work for this assignment. The speaker should be a public personality, in other words, the speech must be available to the public.

It will be easiest on you if you choose a speech you can access on video but also find the manuscript for the speech. Two excellent options are:

https://www.americanrhetoric.com

If you use this site then you probably want to go to the speech bank. Speakers are listed alphabetically by FIRST name and many speakers have several different speeches. One good thing about this site is most of the videos have a manuscript of the speech with them. This site has so much material and many resources that are not related to politics. Also, I just noticed that Mike Pence's veep acceptance speech is available and so is Michelle Obama's dnc16 speech from Monday night. Interestingly, I searched for Donald Trump but couldn't find his convention speech. Several of you have mentioned you are history and politics buffs and this site has so much useful material. (Sidenote: if you want to analyze a speech by Dr. King - maybe you'd choose something besides I Have a Dream - it is so iconic it can be a little difficult to write about in a fresh way).

https://www.ted.com
Ah, ted.

I'm sure this site is much more familiar to many of you and most of the material is pretty recent. It is a greater range of material - some of it astounding and some of it not quite as good. If you choose a ted talk be aware that you can look at the interactive transcript for many of the speeches. It is a very useful function.

2. Watch and read the speech at least two or three times. Take notes and figure out what you want to comment on.

3. Write an essay analyzing the speech and speaker. Make a thesis and support it. Comment on the speaker's verbal and physical style and credibility, speech structure, evidence and support, quality of claims and ideas and the overall quality of the speech. You may want to do a little research for context - this depends on the speech you choose.

4. Cite any sources you check or look at for this paper. Also, cite the speech in the Works Cited. Be very careful to cite sources. Plagiarism, even when unintentional, is very serious.
