The health belief model can be used by nurses to determine patients readiness and motivation to learn and make lifestyle changes. It is important for the patient to believe that he/she is at risk. Once the patient believes he/she is at risk they will be more willingly to accept information given. Patients will be more open to accept education and will be more interested in obtaining the necessary information to make changes.

Nurses help educate patients on a daily basis. They have to determine what education technique works for the patients the best and when is it a good time for them to learn what is being presented. Finding out these two things will cause for better effectiveness. Nurses must take every opportunity they have to stress the material over and over a couple times and question patients about it to determine understanding.

Using the health belief model is an effective tool to determine patients readiness and willingness to make lifestyle changes. Nurses provide and elaborate on information given with the hopes to make the patient fully aware of risks and consequences. Encouraging patients to make changes will help provide greater outcomes. With patients fully understanding, the patient is more likely to adhere to changes.
