Another family large family of interesting curves can be useful in graphics. Consider the path traced by a point rigidly attached to a circle as the circle rolls around another fixed circle. These are called trochoids. The tracing point is attached to the rolling circle at the end of a rod k units form the centre. The fixed circle has radius a. There are two basic kinds: When the circle rolls externally, an epitrochoid is generated and when it rolls internally, a hypotrochoid is generated. The children's game Spirograph is a familiar toll for drawing trochoids.
