Homework: Foundations of Emergency Management
There are a few important rules to observe during the Group Discussion process: (i) no profanity or offensive language; (ii) no personal attacks, and (iii) be courteous and professional when you respond to one of your classmates - part of the education process involves disagreeing without being disagreeable, which is not synonymous with disrespect. However, if I read something that I don't think is appropriate, then I will immediately remove it from the forum.
The following are the four grade ingredients for each Group Discussion throughout the Semester:
First, choose a topic, conduct research, and write at least three good paragraphs in your response.
Second, always include your personal perspective and comment on the subject matter of the topic you have chosen to discuss. Do not merely define the topic/subject matter.
Third, always be sure to cite a legitimate reference source related to your research findings - it's ok to submit a direct quote, but be sure to cite the reference in a formal APA (7th edition) bibliography format at the end of the homework. The course textbook Introduction to Emergency Management (Haddow, 2020 / 7th edition), is acceptable as a reference, as you bought it and should use it accordingly. Again, however, be sure to cite other relevant sources. DO NOT simply cut/paste information, nor ever use Wikipedia, or you will reap what you sow!
Fourth, late submissions will not be accepted and will result in loss of grade points for the course.
Choose one of the following questions or statements and provide your subject matter perspective:
Chapter 1: The Historical Context of Emergency Management
Why was the response to Hurricane Katrina so ineffective, and how did the poor response change emergency management in the United States? What do you believe could have been done in the years preceding Hurricane Katrina for the states to have been more prepared to manage this disaster?
As the emergency manager of your community, what appropriate organizations/key stakeholders would you recommend to responsibly involved in the business continuity process of emergency management (mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery) actions, and then consider how you would apply the Whole Community concepts to that community.
Chapter 2: Natural & Technological Hazards & Risk Assessment
Provide an overview of natural hazards and technological (man-made) hazards, and include examples of each and their distinctive differences. Then, select a hazard that would pose a significant threat to life and property, and as you being the emergency manager, what steps would you plan for, and prepare a community for such a hazard, or to effectively plan and prepare for a disaster.
Provide an overview of the hazards risk management process, and include the purpose of a hazard profile, risk assessment, and hazard risk analysis.
Format your homework according to the give formatting requirements:
1. The answer must be double spaced, typed, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
2. The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the homework, the course title, the student's name, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
3. Also include a reference page. The references and Citations should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
