Why use of less diol than diisocyanate might be good idea

In traditional step polymers (such as PET or nylon), use of stoichiometry less than 1 (r ratio less than 1) is typically assumed to be problematic, because it will result in lower-than-desired molecular weights. In the generation of polyurethanes (from diols and di-isocyanates), can you think of examples where use of less diol than diisocyanate might be a good idea?
