Why might a cross-sectional design be a limitation

Assignment task:

A cross-sectional study is one point in time, think of it as a photo with a camera. Why might a cross-sectional design be a limitation?

"Our study had several limitations. First, we used a cross-sectional design that prevents making causal inferences regarding perceived discrimination and the diabetes outcome measures. However, given the practical limitations of assessing lifetime experience with discrimination, our cross-sectional design is considered an appropriate method to investigate the potential impacts of perceived discrimination. Second, inconsistent exposure periods were used to assess perceived discrimination and diabetes-related data. Specifically, an unrestricted exposure period for perceived discrimination (lifetime) and a more recent and narrow period for diabetes measures (1 year) were used. This inconsistency may reduce the precision of the reported estimates, result in less sensitive measures, and explain the null findings between perceived discrimination and some diabetes service and diabetes control measures. Future studies may address these 3 limitations by using longitudinal research design."
