Respond to Peers: Review your classmates' posts, and respond to at least two of your peers. Compare and contrast your reasons why general education courses are important with that of your peers' reasons and rationale.
PEER 1:
When a person is looking to get a degree, they enroll in college with a concentration in a certain field. In developing as a student, it is important to learn beyond what is included in the core curriculum of their major. While it is important to be fully versed in the subject of interest, the student becomes more valuable as a person, employee, and member of society when they learn the curriculum included that is provided in the general education classes.
College is meant to further ones education and develop the student beyond the requirements for a chosen profession; it develops the person to be a well-rounded, conscientious citizen of the world. When we can understand that everything we do is interconnected, regardless if we actively participate or not, it allows us to be more informed decision makers in this world.
General education classes increase skills in problem solving such as using math skills to discover the unknown. English and literature classes help develop our use of grammar and articulation so that we can be more effective communicators. This helps the individual beyond their profession. When one wants to write a letter expressing a concern to a local group or government official, their message is more likely to be read and considered when they can express their stance in a way that shows they are well-informed on the subject. Showing that they can argue a matter with an understanding of both sides of the situation, allows all to find a better solution.
Becoming well-informed means that one has taken the time to understand the matter completely by doing research. General education classes prime the individual for other classes and for real life matters by giving experience in researching from credible sources. We learn how to distinguish what a credible source really is. This becomes valuable in life much beyond our curriculum. We know that a simple Google search on a topic will give many biased results, but we can sift through to find the credible and real news, then we can understand the topic fully.
Our society has changed over the years in which the economy has developed from agrarian to an industrial economy to what we have now which is described as a knowledge-based economy (Gaff, 2004). In the article by Gaff, he discusses how this shift in the type of economy that we have today where unscripted problems are presented, the person is better prepared with general and liberal education. Being specialized in one area is not enough when the problem climbs out of that scope. This type of education allows us to stretch our intellectual muscles and ready us for real-world application.
PEER 2:
General education programs are a corner stone for many institutions across the country. While many universities have their own reasons for requiring such courses the fundamental reasons for having students participate in these programs are the same. One of the reason that can be observed across many general education programs that institutions require is that such a practice allows the students to understand their major's place in education as a whole (Forsen, 2006). This means that universities are giving students the ability to see that all aspects are interrelated and not one study is interdependent. Another reason that students should be accepting of general education programs let them discover what field they may be really interested in (Forsen, 2006). Some students enroll in post-secondary education know exactly what they want to study, while others have no idea what they want to major in. Either way a general education program is created to give students a sense of direction, and in some cases allow them to change their mind on what they want to study. A third benefit that general education programs provide students is that it gives students a foundational "core" of education that they can not only use for the rest of their time in school, but for the rest of your life (Forsen, 2006). Generally these core classes include competencies in critical thinking, oral communication, writing, and math.
One of the things that I have learned throughout my time in school, that I will take with me for the rest of my life, is something that I picked up in taking SOC 120. Throughout the class we learned the principles of theories such as deontology, utilitarianism, and different ethical perspectives. Although we learned some great information within this class, the one thing that I took away from it was how to really get involved in the class discussion. This was one of the first classes that I took here at Ashford, and before this class I would pretty much just go through the motions, while I participated in the discussion, I just didn't actively keep the conversation going. After receiving some criticism from my instructor I began asking questions at the end of my responses and then went back to see if I had any responses to what I had asked. This will not only help me with my time at Ashford but it will lead to me having better discussions with my manager and colleagues in my job when I graduate.
A second thing that I have learned in my time at school is something that I acquired while I took SRM 401. For the final assignment we had to create a business plan for a new sports organization of our choice. We had to work through all the logistics of how we will obtain funding, where we wanted the team to participate, and all of the financials that were involved. This was a great practice for me because I am currently trying to start a business myself selling sunglasses and one of the things I am working on is a business plan. I will be able to use the principles I used in this course to help me construct my plan.
Finally, another thing that I will be able to use for the rest of my life is something I learned in BUS 303. Throughout this course we studied the everyday human interaction that happen in the workplace. We learned the importance of having great communication with everybody, developing new and current employees as a means of meeting the company's goals, and how to keep employees motivated while raising their moral. These are all things that I will be able to take into the next chapter of my life because whether I am working for myself, or for another company, I will have to possess the skills necessary to interact with people in the most effective way possible.
