Why female crime can oftentimes stem from a history of abuse

Problem:

Introduction

It has been argued that female crime can oftentimes stem from a history of abuse within the family, including incest. This troubled family life can push girls toward male figures that, on the surface, seem better than their family. However, in the end, efforts to get out of one bad situation lead them into another. Women are not alone in this regard. There are many who might argue that their past dictates their present behaviors.

Prompt:

For this DB question, I'd like you to comment upon your views about how much one's life history should impact society's reaction to one's criminal behavior. Should one's history of trauma factor into the situation when it comes to sentencing? Or, does keeping this in mind give someone an undeserved "pass"?  Certainly, it can be argued that a history of childhood abuse/ trauma can propel one into criminal behavior - be it gangs, prostitution, theft for survival. But, at what point should one be held responsible for their behavior and expected to not be a criminal, despite their past? Do you favor diversion / counseling or jail? Your thoughts??
