Discussion Post: Stepping Up

Readings introduced you to the academic challenges facing students and institutions particularly as they relate to the issue of developmental education. Kuh et al. (2010) suggest DEEP institutions share a responsibility for educational quality and student success that ultimately results in high expectations for student performance.

In this Discussion, you will reflect upon the issues of cost as it relates to sharing the responsibilities of developmental education and the benefits of offering developmental coursework and opportunities to students.

Post your response to the following questions of purpose and responsibility:

• Who should be responsible for developmental education?

• Who should pay for it-students, institutions, parents, financial aid, or a combination of these?

• What are the implications of these choices for student academic success?

• Do the answers to these questions differ at two- and four-year institutions?
