While metal oxides react with water the oxygen usually ends

While metal oxides react with water, the oxygen usually ends up as the hydroxide ion, separate from the metal. On the contrary when nonmetallic oxides react with water, the oxygen ends up as part of the nonmetal species. (For instance, upon reaction of CO2 with water, the oxygen remains on the carbon in H2CO3.)
