Problem:
In an open group where individuals are joining at a variety of times, the stages of a group are less clearly defined. Some members who began at the same time may be in the working stage, while new members are still in the initial stage. This can cause difficulties amongst a group because the new members are building trust and learning the dynamics of a group, while the older members have already established these important factors. The first practice I would have to bring new members into a group in a way that is beneficial to all would be a clear introduction. This would include introducing myself, having group members introduce themselves, and having the new member introduce themselves. Additionally, I would encourage old members to share a little about the work they have done in the group so that the dynamics of the group are shared with the new member. I think it is important during this time to also avoid pressuring the new member to fully engage. This is likely a time of anxiety for the new member, so it would be important to give them the space to develop trust before expecting them to engage in session. In order to prepare an established group for the arrival of a new member, I would ask everyone to reflect on how they felt when they first joined. Were they anxious, scared, lonely? If so, what made it easier for them, and how can we support our new member? I would also want to acknowledge the old members' feelings, as having a new member join may create some fear due to trusting a stranger. With enough structure and having a new member join a group does not have to be disruptive to the work being done. Need Assignment Help?
How can I respond to this?
