Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to use a particular detail or details from what someone foolishly call "ordinary" life and create something original, that you will hopefully like. Choose some detail or aspect of what you have seen in visit to the college cafeteria and create a story, personal essay, memoir, fiction or nonfiction using that "raw material." This is about observation, about using the details that find in real life to fuel and enhance writing. Therefore, it does not have to be "true" or accurate to reality. It is not a straight report of what you saw, using your imagination.
If having trouble making something from what you saw, ask yourself: What were your subjects thinking? What might they have been doing before they came to the cafeteria? What will they do after they leave? Is he/she writing a journal entry or a revolutionary tract? Is he/she texting a boyfriend, or ex-girlfriend? What's in that Sloppy Joe? What you create can be in any others scene, any genre, but must based on or including the details from the cafeteria that you saw, what is she/he doing, what does he/she wear, appearance, wearing, expression etc. It is your job to create something use the details from your observation.
Double-spaced, Times New Roman, minimum 5 pages.
