Mini Literature Review (MLR)
Poverty and unemployment are one of the critical factors that derail the overall development and growth of a nation. Entrepreneurship is one of the valuable prospects on African continent that can engage people in viable activities. They have the potential to increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and promote the well-being and enhance the status of the people. It is thus important to identify the factors that are responsible for poverty and how these factors can be mitigated with the promotion of entrepreneurship in the sub- Saharan Africa. (SSA)
Context of problem
The Lack of job prospects, mismanagement of resources, the high cost of transportation, and increased health burden are the most common problems associated with the communities of Sub-Saharan Africa. Entrepreneurship is one of the exemplary programs that has the potential to engage community members, especially the youth of this region to overcome the financial burden. With the increased prospect of setting small scale entrepreneurship, African population is displaying the true potential to increase the overall GDP.
The rise of entrepreneurship among the Sub-Saharan Africa population is also sufficient for the community's development, as it engages youth, help minimize the crime rate, and reduces the poverty level. The scope of the present mini literature review is to illustrate the beneficial role of "entrepreneurship" in the context of mitigation poverty and unemployment rate for the African region.
Contribution of the study to the literature
Statistics from the World Bank, more than 49% of African population are living on less than $1.25 income per day.
Solt, (2016) in his report pointed out critical factors that are responsible for sustained poverty and lack of job opportunities in the sub-Saharan African region. The prime factor in this regard is the lack of education that in turn is also responsible for the lack of the ability to access possibilities.
Mismanagement by some governments in which some funded money for community development are not properly used, ill-utilization of land, and high illiteracy rate are mutual concern that is responsible for increased condition of limited resource and job opportunities.
In another report by Bain et al. (2013), the conditions such as the lack of proper sanitation, consumption of unsafe water, increased prevalence of AIDS, and other health complications are also some of the causes of deteriorated lifestyle in region.
Furthermore, the lack of well-equipped educational facilities is also responsible for the availability of cheap labor and lack of awareness. Consequently, most people are unable to make proper use of available natural resources and hence the low utilization of fresh water, forest resources, and,the development of industrial sector is limited.
With the increased prospect of globalization, entrepreneurship is found to be one of the potential solutions in mitigating the problem of unemployment in the sub-Saharan African region according to DeJaeghere & Baxter, (2014). Secondly, Simo Kengne et al. (2016), stated that, the African continent is rich in natural resources, labor, and time, and these which can be utilized for the establishment of small scale entrepreneurship responsibilities. Additionally, the factor of limited opportunity, scarce resources for livelihood and engagement of youth in activities are also supportive for reducing the poverty.
Contribution of the context to the problem
Based on the study of literature, it has been realized that the key factors responsible for unemployment are political misconduct, lack of education, and poor management of available human and natural resources. The scope that has the potential to overcome the challenge of poverty and unemployment is the activities of entrepreneurship. Nega and Schneider (2014) have referred to the vocational activities such as preparing hand-made items through arts and craft for home decoration, making use of resources that are available on grassland and forest, processing them for export and manufacturing activities with an investment of funds by stakeholders; can be effective in this regard.
According to critical components of African Economic Development (AED), entrepreneurship is active in a way that it accepts adoption of risk, overcomes financial barriers, and offers the opportunity for employment by mitigating the social barriers. The prime challenges that still prevent growth in the present contemporary world include
- poor communication skills;
- poor language that are profanely related to English;
- non-supportive government/political parties;
- high transportation charges; and
- Increased health burden, hinders the full-scale proliferation of entrepreneurship.
Research Questions
A research question guides and centers a research work. It had been clear and focused, as well as synthesize multiple sources to present the sole argument. The research question should be ideally and something that the writer is interested in or for. The research questions that guided this study were:
Research Question 1: To what extent the Sub-Saharan African countries governments developed the potential of their citizenry in entrepreneurship?
Research Question 2: To what extent has entrepreneurs contributed to the reduction of the poverty incidence in developing countries?
Research Question 3: To what extent enterprise has contributed to the decline of the high rate of poverty in sub-Saharan African countries.
