What to do when you are in a tsunami

Assignment task: Please provide a response this following discussion:

Using the materials provided by FEMA, I have decided to develop an emergency plan for a tsunami. "A tsunami (pronounced "soo-nah-mee") is a series of waves generated by an undersea disturbance such as an earthquake (FEMA, 2021)." Using this information, it's pretty easy on what the first step to do is. First step, move.

Since moving away from a coastal line isn't for everybody, the following are the steps to prepare for any disaster. The bolded lettering are the steps and the unbolded lettering is my planning.

Tsunamis develop when an unsettling of the water occurs. This can be something simple like an iceberg falling, or it can be more disastrous like an earthquake. Out on the coastal lines, this can occur once very few years. It's one of those things that is bound to happen at some point.

Hold a family meeting to talk about the steps they'll take to be ready when disaster happens in their community. Developing a family disaster plan is crucial to this planning because everyone would need to know what their roles are. For a tsunami, one person Is in charge of creating communication to every other family member, another can be in charge of having emergency bags packed and ready to go, another can be in charge of travel and where to meet, and another can be in charge of keeping everyone on route.

"Each family member, regardless of age, can be responsible for helping the family be prepared. Activities can include posting emergency telephone numbers, installing smoke detectors, determining escape routes, assembling disaster supply kits and taking first aid or CPR courses (FEMA, 2021)." As said above, dividing the roles can bring calm to an unsteady event. Making sure everyone has what they need, or what they are in charge of, can bring clarity to moments of unclarity.

The final step emphasizes the need to practice the plan on a regular basis so family members will remember what to do when disaster strikes. Practicing is the easy part. The hardest event to practice would be where everyone is spread out. Imagine a family of four with two parents and two kids. If each person is at their work or school, it can be difficult to manage contact between them all. There are a few ways to practice this and that can be sending random text messages throughout the day to see if they respond back. Other ways can be to keeping physical shape, taking your individual role and mastering it, or learning another persons role in case something happens to them.

I am a big fan of television. Seeing what other people do can bring insight to yourself and on how to keep your family safe. Watching seasons of a show called Doomsday Preppers can solve this. Doomsday Preppers is a show that has people already prepping for a natural disaster that they think will happen. Examples of this would be zombie outbreaks, a new flu that can't be controlled, or in this case tsunamis. At the end, experts rate them on a scale and judge them base on how prepped they are.

For a more formal answer, the Red Cross always has preparedness videos. If you click the link on reference #2, it will bring you to the official Red Cross preparedness checklist. In there, it has the signs that a tsunami is going to happen, what to do when you're in a tsunami and what to do afterwards.
