Problem

I think that Columbus and other Europeans had their own misconceptions. They mistakenly believed that the people they met were "Indians" in some sort of way. When they describe the "Indians", they are objectively focused on describing what they see and not the interactions of who the people are. They presumably make assumptions in this aspect and write down their bias. This makes their stories unfair in many ways.
