• Your document should be professionally formatted and include

o Your Name
o Your Student ID
o Unit Code
o Assessment Number (i.e. ICTSUS501 Assessment 1)

• Reference to each question number and retype each question with your answers

• This is an open book assessment, you must answer every question and provide enough information to demonstrate sufficient understanding of what has been asked to achieve competency. Please ask your Trainer/Assessor if you are unsure what is sufficient detail for an answer

• Ask your trainer/assessor if you do not understand a question. Whist your trainer/assessor cannot tell you the answer, he/she may be able to re-word the question for you or provide further assistance based on the Institute's "Reasonable Adjustment Policy"

• Answers should be your own work, in your own words and not plagiarised, nor copied. However, if an answer is cut & pasted (such as a definition), then the source should be referenced

Information for Students

This is an open-book assessment. Write your answers to the questions below. Unless otherwise specified keep all your answers below 100 words. Use your own words in the answers - don't copy information verbatim from the Internet!

1. Briefly explain what is meant by the following terms:

• business domain;
• business function;
• organisation.

2. Summarise how I determine if a guest operating system, say Windows 2008 Server is compatible with Microsoft Hyper V. If an operating system is not compatible with Microsoft Hyper V, what, if anything, can I do to resolve the situation?

3. Describe how I would configure the following IP-related parameters on a Windows server: IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.

4. List two software products that are currently used in industry to provide server virtualisation.

5. Give two examples of information about a server running virtualisation software you would document as part of a technical specification for that server. For each example of information, describe how you would gather the information.

6. In a project implementing a virtualisation solution, it is typical to have a planning process, a build process and a manage process. Give an example of how the outputs from one phase in the project, such as the planning process, can become an input into the next phase of the project, such as the build process.

7. List two system diagnostic tools I could use to gather information about servers that I am considering for virtualisation. Briefly describe how I would use the tools.

8. When I am planning my server design for virtualisation, briefly summarise the considerations that would apply to configuring power supplies and power management on a server running virtualisation software.

9. When I am planning my server design for virtualisation, briefly describe at least two factors that determine how much memory (RAM) is needed on a server running virtualisation software, such as Microsoft Hyper-V.

10. When I am planning my server design for virtualisation, briefly describe at least two factors that determine how many processors are needed on a server running virtualisation software, such as Microsoft Hyper-V.

11. When I am planning my network architecture for virtualisation, , briefly describe at least two factors that determine how many network cards (NICs) and what bandwidth are needed on a server running virtualisation software, such as Microsoft Hyper-V.

12. When setting up and installing Microsoft Hyper V, how do I determine what server hardware is compatible with the software I want to install, i.e. what vendor resource would I consult to answer this question?

13. Briefly describe the three types of virtual switches supported in Microsoft Hyper V.

14. Briefly describe the purpose of checkpointing in Microsoft Hyper V.

15. Briefly describe the following features as they apply to server CPUs

a. Single processor

Assessment 2: Case Study

Information for students

This is a project/report assessment task. You have the option of doing the task as a group (3 students maximum per group). You should use the Case Study Report Template (see Learner Resources for the unit) to help you structure your assignment. Write your report, making sure to list all the students who are in your group in the Introduction to the report. All students need to hand in a copy of the report as part of their assessment submission.

Scenario

For this assessment task, you need to prepare a report that outlines a server virtualisation plan, designs a virtual server specification and describes how a virtual server will be installed and tested, for a college called ABC College. ABC currently has 20 physical servers, with different Operating System, CPU utlilisation, RAM utilisation and application software requirements (see ABC College Hardware and Software inventory below).

ABC Hardware and Software Inventory .

ABC College is currently running physical servers with the following characteristics:

ABC College has an organisational policy preferring a fully virtualised solution, so is looking for a solution that will enable it to virtualise all its existing servers. ABC College has already done some feasibility study of how it could virtualise all its current servers that has confirmed this should be possible. ABC College also and has an organisational preference for Microsoft solutions.

That initial feasibility report on server virtualisation has noted the following points

• Any virtualization cluster should not have a single point of failure i.e. the cluster should have a minimum of two nodes,
• A preference for a Hyper-V solution
• Data can be migrated between physical and virtual servers of the same type by using the company's backup software to backup files from the physical machine and restore them on a new virtual machine

Your report is being prepared for Ms. Johnson, the IT Manager at ABC College.

Your report should include the following parts (see the ICTSUS501 Case Study Report Template) in Learner Resources for this subject.

Introduction:

• Briefly describe the purpose of the report, who the report is prepared for, and the names and student ids of the students in your group

Part 1. Plan server virtualisation:

For part 1 of your report,

• Assess the information the customer has already provided, such as

- The feasibility study mentioned above,
- The organisational preferences expressed, and
- The existing server infrastructure.

• Describe the following:

- What virtualisation solution are recommending,
- What resources will be needed to be purchased, and
- What approval from ms. Johnson you are seeking.

Part 2. Design virtual server specification:

Ms. Johnson has approved your initial plan, and now you need to design the virtual server specification.

• Confirm what operating system and virtualisation software you will be using,

- This section should outline your proposed solution for virtualization.
- This should outline the number of physical servers you will deploy,
- The virtualization software you will use and
- The cost of these hardware and software components (for a cluster of two physical servers, a network switch, an ISCSI storage server, and a administrative host to manage the cluster) Note: you can use the cost information provided in the Indicative Costs Table below which have been provided to you by a colleague as fitting within the budget for ABC College.

Part 3. Plan virtual server installation:

Here you need to plan your virtual server installation (you will do the actual installation in the lab exercises).

• You should advise Ms. Johnson of

- The applicable WHS guidelines you will follow in performing the installation.

- How you will get access to the site to perform the installation. For this item, you should both describe how you would gain access to the site in your report, and be prepared to role play the exercise where the trainer plays the role of the customer in the class or when you present your assignment

- What tasks you will need to perform, and in what sequence.

- How you will review hardware and software compatibility.

Part 4. Integrate and test virtual server:

Here you need to describe your plan for testing the server after installation.

• You need to describe

- What tests you will run, and
- what resources you will need.
- How these will impact on the network.
- How you will record the results of tests.
- How any test failures/errors will be diagnosed and rectified.

Part 5. Complete work and document activities:

• Once you have completed the installation

- You need to document your implementation as per ABC College guidelines and
- Hand it over to Ms. Johnson.
- You should prepare a network diagram of the implemented configuration. This should show the two cluster nodes, the management nodes, the switch, and the administrative host all connected in a single network.

Indicative Costs Table

Solution Component Indicative cost

One cluster node server, 2-core CPU, 500 GB local disk, 64 GB memory, 10 Gb Ethernet $5,500 (per server)

One 24 port Ethernet switch (1/10 Gb ports) $3,000

One ISCSI storage server (4 10Gb ports) $5,000 for base unit, and $1,000 for each TB of storage used)

Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization license (up to 24 VMs) as art of Windows 2012 Server license $3,500 per annum (per server)

Labour costs estimate to design, implement and test a virtualisation server $3,000 (30 hours at $100/hr)

ASSESSMENT 3- LAB

Scenario.

This lab should be read in conjuction with the case study for the unit on virtualization at ABC College. Doing the labs represents the hands on tasks that complement the case study assessment task for the unit.
Lab Overview

In these labs you will implement the technologies you recommended for ABC College. You need to:

• Install the Hyper-V feature under Windows 2012
• Install and test a guest operating system under Hyper-V
• Review the Hyper-V error log

Note that at different times you will need to take screenshots of the labs at different points to prove you completed the lab and attach these to your assessment resources summary. Please read all instructions carefully to make sure you have taken all the screenshots you need.

To complete these labs, you can either do them on the VIT lab in rooms 4 in level 10, or you can do them at home on your own computer.

If you choose to use the VIT labs, you will need to open the virtual machine ICTSUS501 in VMWorkstation. You can do this in the following way.

1. From a student computer, map a network drive to the share where the virtual machine is (e.g. from the command line, type net use g: \\172.100.0.10\student$ This will create a virtual drive on your local computer mapped to the share.

2. Go into VMWorkstation, and choose the Open Virtual Machine option. Browse to the G: drive on your computer, browse to the ICTSUS501 folder, and load the virtual machine.

3. The Windows 2012 signon is userid student and password abc@123

Lab 1 Installing Hyper-V

Overview: In this lab you are going to install the Hyper-V manager on Windows 2012 server.

Instructions

1. Install the Hyper V feature in Windows 2012 as described above.

2. Configure Windows Update so that security patches are automatically applied to the server running Hyper V

After completing the lab 1, proceed to lab 2, where you will set up a guest operating system on the Hyper V system you just created.

Lab 2. Installing and testing a guest operating system

Overview: In this lab you are going to install a guest operating system for the Hyper-V system you installed in lab 1

Instructions.

1. Install a guest operating system running Windows Server 2012 (installation files for this will be on C:\lab-files). Call your new virtual machine Snnnnn (where Snnnnn is your student number). Note: you only need to create one virtual machine, not two as shown in the image below). Make sure you configure an appropriate password to secure your server

2. Log on to the virtual machine you just created, and verify that the VM is working correctly. You should do this according to the test plan you submitted in your case study

3. Take a screen shot of your virtual machine to prove you completed the installation (it should look similar to that below) and copy this into your workbook for evidence of having completed the lab

4. Review the Hyper-V log files to make sure that there were no errors in creating your virtual machine. (If there were any errors, correct them before taking your screen shot)

5. Take a screenshot of the Hyper_V event logs - it should look similar to that below

Information for students:

Assessment 4: Questions

This is an open book assessment that will be delivered through Moodle, the VIT e-learning platform. You need to logon to Moodle to complete the test. You can make as many attempts at the test, and you need to get all questions correct to be judged Satisfactory in this assessment task.
