Discussion Post: Research Methods
• Did Milgram use qualitative or quantitative methods? Of the methods we have studied, which which specific one did he use? What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of the type of method he used?
• Of the four types of samples presented in the PowerPoint, what type of sampling technique did Milgram use? What problems do you see with the sample?
• What was the dependent variable in Milgram's research? How was it operationalized (i.e. measured) What were some of the independent variables depicted in the film?
• Drawing on McIntyre, briefly describe the ethical obligations of sociologists and to whom they are obligated. To what extent did Milgram fulfill the ethical obligations of social researchers?
• How might Milgram's findings be useful? Do you think that if Milgram's study were performed today the results would be the same? Why/Why not?
