Social media (Twitter, Instagram, etc.) has been one of the most influential inventions of our century. Which of the following statements best describes what Plato would likely think about modern-day social media? All forms of media, including social media, are important parts of any modern civilized society. However, social media content must be strictly controlled and regulated by government in order to maximize its usefulness to all people. Some portray social media as inherently toxic or evil. However, like other human inventions, social media is just another of mankind's great tools and that tool can be used by each of us to achieve either moral or immoral ends. As a Classical philosopher, I support all technological advancements, including the invention of social media. Having the ability to distribute news and other information to a large number of people almost instantaneously improves our society as a whole with little to no downside. Rapid dissemination of information to everyone is the cornerstone of democracy and justice. And social media helps make that easier. We cannot live in a "just society" unless we allow the free exchange of ideas, even ideas we disagree with.
