OPERATING PROCEDURE

The purpose of this intervention is to assist you in setting goals & developing an action plan for successfully completing all tasks related to the Team Project by the assigned due date.

1. Development of a Team-Mission Statement

The team-mission statement should incorporate answers to the following questions:

• What is the team's specific purpose or reason for being?
• Whom does the team serve?
• What are team's unique qualities as a unit?

To develop such a statement, the team members work individually to answer these questions and then share the results of their work with the total group. After sharing, the members consolidate their individual ideas into a group statement.

2. Development of Team Accountabilities

A team's "accountabilities" are the specific results and/or conditions for which it expects to be held uniquely answerable after a given time period. Such results or conditions should be exclusive to the particular team involved and consistent with the mission statement developed in the previous step; in addition, they should reflect outcomes rather than activities.

Each team member should be asked to work individually to list his or her own accountabilities. Then the participants are polled, and the individual determinations are listed and displayed for the entire group. At this point criteria are established for accountability might be one that applies to two or more members. All individual accountabilities listed previously are screened according to the agreed-on criteria. Those that are determined to be team accountabilities are then divided into logical clusters of items that are similar to or extensions of each other.

3. Goal Brainstorming

The group brainstorms goals associated with the accomplishment of the team accountability, feedback from peers, perceived changes needed, and performance maintenance.

4. Development of Team-Goal Criteria

The participants develop criteria that they feel should be used in identifying final team goals. Examples of such criteria include the following:

• Practicality
• Team control over accomplishment
• Probability of achievement
• Measurability

5. Goal Identification

The list of goals developed in Step 4 is screened against the criteria established in Step 5, thus identifying goals to which the team feels it can commit itself.

6. Goal - Information Brainstorming

For each goal identified, the participants brainstorm the following information:

• Facts presently known
• Assumption and predictions
• Potential problems associated with its accomplishment

7. Action Planning

The team engages in development of an action plan for each goal, incorporating answers to the following questions:

• What objectives must be accomplished?
• How will they be accomplished?
• How will progress be measured?
• Who will be responsible for accomplishing the objectives?
• What will the related time frames be?
