This flow diagram contains a ton of information about the US energy mix. Like regular reading, it should be read from left to right. Energy sources like oil, natural gas, and solar are on the left, and where it's being used (for electricity, transportation, etc) is on the right.
For example, of the 39.49 quads of electrical energy, the largest contributor is coal with 19.13 quads. Of the 39.49 quads, the largest market segment is residential (4.95 quads), and is only barely more than commercial.
Take several minutes to look at the U.S. Energy Flow Diagram file. What surprises you about it? Which energy sources are bigger or smaller than you expected? What makes natural gas unique? How about the amount of energy lost (called "rejected energy" on the chart) during the process?
