Article: Issue ownership: Rethinking some of the fundamentals by Lee Sigelman.
What is your reaction to this week's reading on issue ownership and the information contained in the link above? What issues do the Democratic and Republican Parties "own" today? In what ways have they lost ground or experienced recent "trespassing" of these issues? Speculate on which issues Democrats and Republicans will attempt to own and trespass on in the 2020 General Election.

After doing the reading for this week I have a much better grasp on what exactly issue ownership is; the idea that voters associate certain issues with certain parties. As described in the reading from monkeycage.org, tax cut issues would be more closely associated with the Republican party while environmental issues would be more closely associated with the Democratic party. Current issues that are "owned" by the Republican party are more fiscal while issues that are "owned" by Democrats are more social.
Trespassing of issues has actually helped parties gain credibility with voters. As noted in the readings, when things that were discussed among party members that were already associated with said party, little progress was made. However, when they began "trespassing" on issues that the other party identified with the trespassing party gained credibility. In 2020 I believe that Republicans will begin to dip their feet in more social reformation issues while Democrats do the same with fiscal issues.
The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
