B. Why did du Bois undertake a study of 1899 Philadelphia? (Hint: look at the introduction to the reading or ask Wikipedia/the internet).
C. What part of the city was du Bois studying? How does he describe its condition?
D. What are the data that du Bois uses in his study? How did he obtain these data?
E. According to du Bois, what are the main social groups of 1899 Philadelphia? (You can think in terms of class, race, ethnicity, gender, etc. These will likely intersect. Du Bois uses the words "Negro" and "colored," which are out of date today. You should not use these words unless there is a good reason to do so; if you do use them, you should place them in quotations as I have here. Instead, use the words Black or African-American in your response. Another helpful hint: please refer to Black people instead of "Blacks").
F. What do you think about du Bois's description of the various livelihoods of Black people in 1899 Philadelphia? What does du Bois think are the main problems faced by Black people in Philadelphia at this time?
