INTERVIEWER: Welcome to the Case Management and Services Provided in Criminal Justice podcast. Each weekly podcast is an interview with a subject matter expert who will provide a brief overview of the weekly objectives and how you can apply them in the field of Criminal Justice and Security. This week we're discussing Case Management Overview and Practice Models.

Our subject matter expert for this course is Amanda Biel who has over 12 years' experience in the field of Criminal Justice and Security and currently works as a United States federal probation officer.

So, what are some of the major theories in the field?

AMANDA: Some of the major theories in the field include biopsychosocial theory, strength-based counseling, cognitive behavioral counseling, and solution focused therapy. Biospsychosocial theory essentially incorporates the entire person, both the physical and social: the health, the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, AND occupational aspects.

The entire well-being of the person is focused on under this theory, and this allows the person to move forward because it is not just focusing on one aspect within their life. It creates a healthier, happier person, holistically.

In strength-based counseling, clients focus on what is going right in their life, instead of focusing on the wrong, or negative, aspects of their life. So the case manager works with the client to find successes in the past and present, and uses those to help face the current problem that the client may be facing at that present time.

Cognitive behavioral counseling focusses on the client's negative thoughts, feelings, and consequential actions. What the case manager essentially tries to do is change the client's way of thinking. So they will help the client rationalize the consequences of specific or certain behaviors.

For example, driving on a suspended license may result in more fines and fees, a ticket, maybe jail time depending on the level of offense. When the client rationalizes these particular consequences prior to committing the behavior, then they are more likely to avoid that behavior. So they're thinking cognitively, "what could happen if I do that?"

Solution focused therapy tries to focus the client on the present. It doesn't pay attention to the client's past. The case manager focusses on moving the client forward from where they are now to a positive aspect that they can continue, helping them get through life. This, hopefully, will resolve the problems that they may have had in the past. Those are the more common theories within the field

INTERVIEWER: So from those theories that are used, what would you say, from your experience, is the most commonly used theory?

AMANDA: The most commonly used theory I've found is cognitive behavioral counseling, because what you are essentially doing is changing the particular client's way of thinking. So you're giving the client the opportunity to rationalize consequences that may be a result of a certain behavior.

Typically what I've found when dealing with a lot of clients is that they are more reactive, so they do the behavior without really thinking of the consequences. They are less likely to be proactive, where they sit and analyze, "okay if I do this, what could possibly happen?" So they don't really rationalize the consequences of committing certain behaviors.

The case manager works with a client to help them rationalize those behaviors that result is certain consequences, which will hopefully keep them out of trouble in the long run.

INTERVIEWER: Consider these concepts as you read your materials, complete your assignments, and participate in class discussion. Follow up with your instructor if you have any questions.
