THE TOPIC

What is the impact of social conditions and self-management on health access and health disparity?

It is evident that the wider society has an influence on the health care reforms thus it is indispensable to tackle health disparities form the sociological point of view that focuses on social relationships, social interaction, and culture (Schaefer, 2015). There are various social aspects that make some people healthy and others ill.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2016), social conditions such as social norms and attitudes, socioeconomic factors like poverty, exposure to crime, violence, among other adverse events, social support, and public safety have contributed to health care challenges and illnesses in the society. Such is the case whereby individuals that are disenfranchised socially and politically are more likely to become ill and to receive inadequate health care.

Therefore, it is crucial to access the impact of social conditions and self-management on health access and health disparity to enhance health care intervention among individuals in the community. The purpose of my research would be to discuss sociocultural barriers and social determinants of health from sociological perspective to help to understand health disparity in the community.

Sociocultural barriers including the minority population, language and cultural issues as well as lack of appropriate health educationalframework to care contributed to disparities in health and health care (Nies& McEwen, 2015). Also, social disorders such as increased crime rates and violence are associated with poor mental health (Western, Bloome, Sosnaud&Tach, 2012). Today, health care practitioners have shifted their focus on community and public health intervention to prevent diseases.

Thus, integrating sociological perspectives into nursing practice would enhance population health and reduce health care disparities among individuals in the community by helping to understand how lack of access to health services leads to poor health outcomes, delays in receiving appropriate care and preventable hospitalizations (DHHS, 2016).
