What is the effect size for the relationship between

Question: Part One:

Problem Set 1: One-way ANOVA

File: Open "Module 3 Exercise File 1" found in Blackboard Course Content (Course Guides and Assignment Instructions-Assignment Instructions-SPSS Homework-SPSS Homework 3 Files).

Research Scenario:A health psychologist is looking into the effects of different kinds of exercise on stress. She divides volunteers into three exercise groups: pilates (n = 6), swimming (n = 5), or biking (n = 5). The volunteers participate in a set number of hours of the exercise for a month, after which the psychologist measures their stress levels on a scale of 1-10 where lower scores = lower stress, and higher scores = higher stress. Conduct a one-way ANOVA to determine the effect of these different exercises on stress levels. Use Tukey's test as the post hoc test for the ANOVA's in 355.

1. Paste SPSS output. Beneath the output, type the answers to the following questions:

a. What is the value of the F statistic for the main effect of exercise?

b. What is the effect size for the relationship between exercise and stress? This value is in the output (for review, see the section on effect size statistics in Lesson 25).

c. What is the mean of the pilates group?

2. Write an APA-style Results section based on your analysis. All homework "Results sections" should follow the example given in the SPSS tutorials and the Course Content document "Writing Results of Statistical Tests in APA Format" (note: you do not have to refer to a figure). Remember to include a decision about the null hypothesis.

3. Create a boxplot to display the difference among the distributions for the threeexercise groups. Remember to put your dependent variable in the "variable" box, and your independent, or grouping, variables in the "category axis" box.

Part Two:

Problem Set 1: One-way ANOVA

Research Scenario: Twenty-four male adolescents who have been diagnosed with conduct disorder with a callous-unemotional presentation (CD-CU) are randomly assigned to one of 3 group therapy conditions: interpersonal problem-solving skills training only (IPST), parent training only (PT), and a combination of the two (IPST + PT). Following six months of therapy, the participants are assessed using the Inventory of Callous Unemotional Traits (ICU; Frick, 2004). On this instrument, scores at or above 27 indicate higher levels of conduct problems and callous-unemotional traits. The scores for each group are shown in the table below. Conduct a one-way ANOVA to determine whether there is a significant difference in ICU scores between the three therapy conditions.

(The steps will be the same as the ones you have been practicing in Part One of the assignment-the only difference is that you are now responsible for creating the data file as well. Remember to name and define your variables under the "Variable View," then return to the "Data View" to enter the data.)

IPST

30, 25, 26, 31, 29, 24, 32, 35

PT

29, 21, 28, 32, 25, 27, 29, 30

IPST + PT

19, 19, 24, 30, 26, 23, 27, 28

1. Paste SPSS output.

2. What is the F ratio for thetherapy group main effect?

3. What is the effect size for the overall effect of therapy type on ICU scores? According to general conventions, is this effect small, medium, or large? (See Effect Size Statistics section in Lesson 25 for conventions for partial eta squared.)

Part Three: Cumulative Homework

Problem Set 1: Choose the correct method from tests learned in previous modules.

Research Scenario:A professor wants to determine how grades are affected by cooperation versus competition in classroom assignments. She randomly divides the class into two groups and gives them the same assignment. Group 1 (n = 10) is given instructions that encourage cooperating with fellow classmates to complete the assignment, and Group 2 (n = 9) is given instructions that encourage competing with fellow classmates to complete the assignment. She then collects and scores the assignments (total possible points = 100). Assume all other variables are controlled for in the study. Choose the correct test to evaluate the claim that there is a difference in scores between the two groups.
