Journal 1-

What is one area of your life where ergonomics plays a large role? Describe that area and the ergonomics issues involved.

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.

Assignment 1-

In Unit I, we discussed the definition of ergonomics and the role of ergonomics in our professional lives. For the Unit I Homework assignment, you will expand on those concepts a bit further and focus on how ergonomics can affect different types of workstations. In one Word document, write responses to the following items. Use APA to cite and reference all outside sources, including the textbook. Please label each section for clarity using APA headings:

1. Describe the relationship between proper ergonomic design and your workstation; include a real-world example. Explain how ergonomics, if not properly applied, can affect your life short-term or long-term. (Note: You may consider your study work station or your workstation at your place of employment.)

2. Amy works for a large variety store in your area. Her work tasks include standing at the cash register (checkout counter) for extended periods of time. She is responsible for scanning items and placing them into bags or the customer's cart. Some of these items can be heavy. Describe some of the areas within this workstation where this employee could be injured. Describe what actions the employer might take to relieve some of these hazards.

3. Adam, a 25-year-old Caucasian male, is an employee working in the automotive section of a large variety store.Using the tables found in Chapter 3, provide a hypothetical description of Adam that would place him in the 50th percentile for height, weight, waist circumference, and body mass index. Provide exact measurements for Adam, using the 50th percentile columns.

Explain one area where these measurements might be of use for the employer as it relates to this employee. You should answer each question using a one- to two-paragraph response. All items combined must be a minimum of two pages in length.

1. Since risk cannot be reduced to zero, the ALARP concept is often applied. What might be some pitfalls to applying this concept?

Your response must be at least 75 words in length.

2. Discuss what you think might be roadblocks to implementing the standard ANSI/AIHA Z10 in a typical manufacturing organization. Which sections might prove to be the most challenging?

Your response must be at least 75 words in length.

3. "Management Leadership and Employee Participation" has been said to be the most important section of the ANSI/AIHA Z10 standard. Provide your opinion as to which section might be the second most important. Support your discussion with examples from personal experience.

Your response must be at least 200 words in length.

4. The stated primary purpose of Z10 is to reduce the risk of occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. As noted in the course text, zero risk is not likely to be achievable, so acceptable risk levels must be defined. What about a goal of zero injuries? Is that achievable? How does "acceptable" risk affect injury reduction goals? Support your discussion with at least two references.

Your response must be at least 200 words in length.Discussion 1- No word limit.

In previous units, we have used the rules of factoring to solve quadratic equations. In this unit, we learn three new methods for solving quadratic equations: the principle of square roots, completing the square, and the quadratic formula.

Part A: Which method for solving quadratic equations do you find the easiest to understand and use? Why?

Part B: Name one field other than pure mathematics that uses quadratic equations, and give an example of how they are used (just an explanation, not a problem worked).

Discussion 2- No word limit

Discuss the type of record keeping system employed by your organization for maintenance of records. Whether your organization is public or private, there must be some form of records keeping. Provide a narrative of what type of system your organization utilizes and who is responsible for the security and upkeep of the system.

Assignment

Standard Operating Guideline Paper

Background Information: You have just been promoted to the rank of lieutenant (or bureau manager if serving in the private sector) and have been appointed to the Fire Prevention Bureau/Office as the new supervisor/leader. Your predecessor held the position for many years and had his or her own way of keeping, storing, and maintaining fire prevention records.

You soon discover that records are in total disarray and very few records are properly stored, nor have the volumes of the records been properly maintained and protected from the environment in which they were stored.

FIR 3303, Introduction to Fire Prevention

You have a bureau crew of four other employees who have had little involvement in the handling of records and you plan to change that.

Task: The purpose of this essay is for you to apply the concepts and information you have learned in this unit about the position of a Fire

Prevention Officer/Manager. This assignment provides you with the opportunity to use your skills, expertise, and experience to enrich your response when compiling data that will be used for risk reduction within the community. You will compose a standard operating guideline (SOG) that should address the following components:

• provide an introduction into what this SOP is designed to accomplish along with the Mission Statement for this Division.

• proper recording of bureau/office inspections, incidents, testing, re-testing, and re-inspections;

• proper storage of all records gathered by the bureau/office; and

• proper maintenance of all stored records for the required amount of time as set-forth by local, state, and/or federal rules and regulations.

You should be clear, concise, and ensure that the SOG addresses each of the three bulleted components given above. The final SOG packet must contain a minimum of one full page for each of the three components listed above; no component can have more than two full pages of text.

Keep in mind that your SOG narratives must be straight-to-the-point. Avoid long rambling narrations as these tend to distract attention and often lead to confusion and misunderstanding of purpose and functionality.

Remember, you are the head of this newly formed bureau and you want to impress your leadership with your knowledge, academic ability, and occupational experience. Be innovative and creative; however, be sure to utilize a variety of sources that must include your textbook.

Your final paper will become your SOG to be used and referred to in your day-to-day operations.

Your sources must be cited, and referenced in APA format. Failure to use appropriate resources, or resources that are available in CSU's Online Library, can lead to deductions.
