• You have highlighted a lot of great information and valuable perspective in your post. In particular, you stated that, "Continued follow-up is important as not only can the counselor ensure the client is in a good place afterwards, but also to show them that someone actually cares for their wellbeing..." Absolutely! This is such an important part of providing an ethical response to clients. Being sure that there are ongoing services in place can make the difference between being able to stabilize the client long-term versus then quickly relapsing back into a crisis state. Another part of this conversation to consider is the setting. Often crisis counseling services can happen on site and in close proximity to a crisis situation. What ethical considerations to professional counselors need to keep in mind related to the setting and client safety/wellbeing?
• The good news is that the more you engage in the practice of therapy, the more comfortable and natural all of these skills will become. However, the bad news (well I guess we could call it bad) is that the poor communication habits we develop now will become very difficult to change later on. Working hard to be sure that we are focusing on intentionally using all of the key attending and communication skills will help ensure that we continue to develop the best practices moving forward. What plans do you have to work on continuing to practice and develop your attending skills beyond this course?
