Part 1

Formative versus Summative Assessment

Receiving feedback as a student-be it formative or summative-is an essential part of learning. We strive for information on how we are doing and what we can do to improve. Higher education courses generally come to an end and we receive a final grade. This is the sum of all of our work throughout the course. As a student, do you prefer formative assessment or summative assessment? What do you personally think are the advantages and disadvantages to each? Explain in depth your thoughts as well as the formal definitions of each form.

Part 2

Learning Through Instructional Feedback

Hi everyone. It's impossible these days to get all the way to graduate school without having received the equivalent of pages and pages of grades from teachers. Granted some of those grades were delivered out of any real or meaningful context. Many may have been simply a letter at the end of a course, after completing one or two major assignments that were never returned. That has to be the worst model of summative assessment, and one that offers almost no information about the specific quality of the work completed.

On the other extreme, I see colleagues complete pages of formative assessment notes for undergraduate essays, essays that are never picked up after the grade is posted. That's a missed opportunity, obviously.

You, as instructors or mentors or corporate trainers yourselves, have to see both sides of this issue, and likewise have to decide where you stand, and how you'll respond to learners yourself.
