What determines who wields hierarchical power in the us

Problem

Historically, the study of American race relations typically problematizes the "othered" status, that is, the non-white status in America's racial hierarchy. However, the sociology of race relations has historically failed to take into account both sides of the black/white binary paradigm when addressing racial inequality. The continuum of whiteness vs. anti-Blackness remains pervasive 21st century American in society. Some people are members of groups with social, political, or monetary power; some have little power in the social, political, or monetary sense. Sometimes when we possess considerable power, we may react by joining our peers in blaming the victim rather than becoming more sensitive to those with less power. Oppression and the Distribution of Power is a highly effective means of establishing the concept of power vs. powerless.
