What are some of the health issues we are seeing in children

Problem

As we age, and our bodies change, nutritional needs may change as well. There are various stages of life that we will be reviewing.

1) Pregnancy
2) Infancy (0-3 years)
3) Childhood (4-11)
4) Adolescence (12-21)
5) Adulthood (21-60)
6) Older Adult (60+)

Task

1) Pregnant and breastfeeding women have increased requirements for calories and for most nutrients. What are some of the most important vitamins and mineral needed during the pregnancy stage? Why are these nutrients needed?

2) Why has the nutritional status and health of American children and adolescents declined in recent years? What are some of the health issues we are seeing in children and teens? What are steps that parents can take to reverse this trend?

3) According to a report by the Merck Institute of Aging and Health and the CDC, two-thirds of older Americans fail to practice good nutrition. What are some issues seen with older adults that can interfere with sound nutrition in this age group? How can these issues be address?

4) The supplement market has grown dramatically in the past years. More than half of Americans use at least one dietary supplement. Should we or should we not take supplements? Are there any specific age groups that should be taking supplements? If so, which age group, which supplement and why?
