What are some further ethical concerns with informed consent

Problem:

Informed consent refers to the process through which a counsellor ensures that the client is aware of the potential risks and benefits associated with therapy, assessment, research, and/or other activities in which they may engage. Informed consent means that the client voluntarily agrees to the counselling process, has a right to understand its implications, and has a free choice about participating. Obtaining informed consent is a cornerstone of conducting ethical therapy, research, and assessment, and is required by ethical codes.

When I work with my clients in the mental health unit, I always let them know I am from a safety standpoint to ensure they can remain safe. At the same time, I support them by letting them know making mistakes is human, but punishing themselves for what has happened will not help them in the long run. It is about realizing a mistake has been made and taking the proper steps to fix the current issue present. I remind them that when a person comes in with a heart attack, we do not blame them for the heart attack; we encourage them to take the necessary steps to improve their health, and the same should be encouraged with mental health. The most crucial aspect, especially when considering informed consent, is to let them know about all aspects of our duty as therapists when they cannot maintain safety (Martin et al., 2015). Part of this is developing a safety plan, but if they cannot stick to it, the best course of treatment at that point is hospitalization for their safety.
