This study presents a global analysis of the potential exposure of occupations and tasks to Generative AI, and specifically to Generative Pre-Trained Transformers (GPTs), and the possible implications of such exposure for job quantity and quality. This research provides a comprehensive examination of the potential impact of Generative Pre-Trained Transformers (GPTs) on various occupations and tasks worldwide. The study utilizes the GPT-4 model to estimate task-level exposure scores, subsequently predicting potential employment effects on a global scale and by country income group. The findings suggest that clerical work is the most susceptible to this technology, with 24% of tasks highly exposed and an additional 58% with medium-level exposure. Other occupational groups show a significantly lower exposure level, with the highest share of highly exposed tasks ranging between 1 and 4 per cent, and medium exposed tasks not exceeding 25 per cent. The study concludes that the primary impact of GPTs will likely be augmenting work, automating certain tasks within an occupation while leaving time for other duties, rather than completely automating occupations.
