What are central difference between oral and written culture

Problem

The author of the blog post "Why Listening, Really Listening, Might Be Declining" has an interesting idea. He suggests, basically, that listening has been on the decline since the invention of the printing press. Prior to the mass dissemination of the printed word, oral communication was dominant. Speaking was the primary way of communicating information - people even read aloud when they were alone! can you find any corroborating (or dissenting) information for this idea? What are the central differences between "oral" and "written" (or "literate") cultures? What implications might this idea have for a world dominated by social media?
