Visual rhetorical analysis

Topic: Visual Rhetorical Analysis

Description:

Visual Rhetorical Analysis:

For this assignment, you must select one visual “space” to analyze. Your chosen “space” can be a picture, location, sculpture, advertisement, or any other visual item that you personally did not create. You will perform a rhetorical analysis on this space as a means to persuade your reader of one of the following:

Option 1: In a thesis driven argumentative essay, argue why it is important to recognize the use of Rhetorical Devices.

Option 2: In a thesis driven argumentative essay, argue why the viewer should not be persuaded by the argument in the visual space.

In one cohesive essay, you will analyze the space, identify the appeals, techniques, arguments, and tools used, as well as provide your own argument according to one of the options above.

In your essay, you will explain the importance and use of the appeals and arguments within “space”. Through your explanation, you will present an analysis of your selected space. The analysis will serve as evidence to your argument by providing your reader with an understanding of how a rhetorical analysis works. You will attempt to prove to your reader that a specific argument is being presented in your selected “space”. By the end of the essay, your reader should understand your argument and the arguments used in your “space”, as well as agree that the argument is present in your selected “space”.

Suggested Format:

• Introduce your essay as a whole, touching on the primary aspects of your essay. Include a clear “Although” thesis statement.

• Introduce Aristotle, explain the three appeals, (Logos, pathos, ethos) and present an argument for 1. why it is important for educated adults to understand persuasive techniques or 2. Why your reader should not be convinced by the visual argument. You should address the concept of arguments and why recognizing these techniques “matter”.

• Discuss your selected space. Identify the appeals used, arguments created within the space, and whether or not the space is successful. Consider the intended audience of your space. Walk your reader through the analysis, convincing them that these aspects exist within your selected space.

• Include Counter Argument. Depending upon the option you have selected, you will either discuss how many believe rhetorical analyses are not important, or you will discuss how many believe visual arguments are convincing.

• Provide a Call-to-Action. Convince your reader that performing such analyses is important in academia and everyday life, or convince your reader to not blindly follow arguments within visual spaces. Imply that the reader should look beyond the surface when they encounter their own “spaces”.

• Wrap up your essay. Finalize your objective of convincing your reader of your primary argument.
