Values in counseling and taking the self- inventory

Problem:

After reading chapter 3 on Values in counseling and taking the Self- inventory, there were some questions that I agreed with and some that I didn't agree with at all. For Example, some questions such as 3,4,6... I Strongly agree with them. I believe that counselors have the right to resonate and express their values without imposing them on clients. Each individual client has to make their OWN decisions, we are not here to convince, impose, and or make decisions for them. While we, as counselors, should not make decisions for our clients, I believe that its healthy for us to challenge our clients' thoughts for them to process and figure out their own values. As we allow them some time to process their own times, its essential to be with them through that time to help them navigate and clarify any questions they may have along the way.

While taking this assessment there were also some questions that I did not agree or resonate with, such as 9,12, and 15. I do not have a difficult time with people who think differently, in opposite, I love meeting new people and hearing their different believes and insights that they have. One does not have to approve of the clients' values as they are entitled to their own beliefs. As a counselor, we do not have the right to impose religion or spirituality on our clients to help them find meanings to life or other situations. We must respect their boundaries and find alternatives to help them find a purpose in living.

Counseling is not always about the theories and techniques that we use with our clients, but more as who we are as a person and are there for our individual clients. Being self-aware is important while counseling because we need to know who we are, how we can present ourselves and how we can best support our clients. At the end we are all humans that have feelings and beliefs, so even us as counselors may sometimes need professional guidance and help to be more effective for our clients. Stress, burnouts, emotional imbalance, and our personal lives can take over and it's our job to make sure we are good before we try to help another person. Need Assignment Help?
