Argumentative Synthesis

Title:

Using the MLA8 documentation style, you are to write a four to five page argumentative synthesis that will argue for a change (position argument) regarding the subjects we discussed in class or take action for a change (proposal argument) regarding the topics we have discussed in class. The assignment will focus on your ideas and the evidence you gather in order to defend your position. You will use third person present tense in writing the paper.

Audience: Your audience is an academic community, your peers, people who are not familiar with your topic, or people who oppose your topic.

Task:

Write an argumentative synthesis by focusing on your specific approved topic. Please choose an aspect of the topic that is personally relevant for you or interests you in some way. The paper, following the writing process must be unified, well supported, correctly documented, organized, and free of grammar, punctuation, and mechanical errors.
How Should I write my paper?

Begin with the Introduction to the paper:

• Your introduction will be written as you have written other introductions especially including:

• Capturing the reader's attention and including background information for your reader that will clearly identify the issue and why this is relevant and deserves discussion.

• You will briefly summarize your argument in the introduction and the opposition to your view.

• It must capture the reader's attention and make him/her want to read on. Refer to what pages in your text? Pages______________.

• You must make sure that your claim is arguable and possibly indicates what evidence you will use to support/prove your claim. Review ?___________________________for more information or help in this area.

Write the Body of the paper:

• Using a clear organizational pattern as outlined in the chapter of the Wilhoit text.

• Using clear organization that will help develop your claim using pure logic or emotion.

• Smoothly transition your reader from one idea to the next in order to keep the reader reading and remember to explain the connection between your grounds and claim.

• Remember that this is a claim driven argumentative essay that uses your ideas. So you should use summaries, paraphrases, and direct quotes in your paper to help support your position or defend your claim.

• Choose these in-text citations wisely and make sure you clearly relate them to the claim so that your audience understands your argument without any confusion. (Make sure you always explain and show what this information means and how it relates to your claim and your supporting idea(s) (assertions).

• Making sure you properly cite and credit all ideas that are not your own. Again, refer to the MLA section of your text book.

• Making sure you include sufficient counter arguments and refute, concede, or accommodate them in the discussion of your position thereby always making your position the stronger one.

Write the conclusion of the paper:

• Do not abruptly end the argument: restate the claim and summarize the arguments primary claims.
• Next use an effective technique to close the argument. You should consider hooking the conclusion to the introduction.
• And use one of the other strategies outlined in your text to add your final comments about the topic.

You should defend/prove your claim from at least these three-six resources :

• Class articles in the text book.
• other scholarly journals and data bases
• Electronic Data bases ,On-Line books. Videos, documentaries
• Hard back books, newspaper articles, pictures
