Disguise is crucial to both Hamlet and Life Is a Dream. Write about the uses of disguise in both plays. How does the explicitly theatrical act of putting on a disguise interact with or develop the major themes of each play? How does the use of disguise call attention to the play?s own theatricality, and how does that metatheatrical aspect of each play affect your reading of its themes?
This assignment asks you not simply to compare and contrast two plays, but to think about how approaching one question through two different plays enriches your perspective on that question beyond the perspective given by a single play. Whether your chosen plays are already in dialogue with each other or not, your paper should make it clear that you are creating a conversation between two plays in order to gain a more complex understanding of a concern or strategy that they share.
