Understanding the basics of cognitive dissonance

Problem 1) Attribution theory: Attribution theory provides us with insight into the relationship between social factors and how individuals explain behaviour. We can be biased in the attributions we make about other people's behaviour. Please post to the group an example from your own life that clearly outlines each of the following: a) the fundamental attribution error (FAE) (make sure your example involves you and another person) and b) the self-serving bias.

Problem 2) Understanding Cognitive Dissonance: When we understand the basics of cognitive dissonance this can really help us understand and explain some of our more puzzling human behaviours. For example, why we would endure uncomfortable rituals just to be part of a group (and why would our loyalty to that group would be so high), why we would smoke, drink or suntan despite the known health risks? Use Cognitive Dissonance to explain a personal example - only use one you are willing to share of course and please do not simply copy one of the examples outlined above. Make sure to show how you reduced the dissonance you felt. NOTE: you are not necessarily aware of 'feeling' dissonance so think carefully about the example you use - you will have to think about it objectively!
