Problem:

All managers, irrespective of where or what they manage, carry out four generic tasks. These comprise planning, controlling, leading and organizing (Lussier, 2006; Hellriegel et al., 2004).

Planning involves defining goals and mapping out ways to reach them; organizing entails arranging and coordinating material, human and information resources aimed at accomplishing desired goals; leading involves motivating others to accomplish organizational goals and controlling involves measuring performance and monitoring progress relative to objectives. Managers require developing several competencies which will facilitate them to carry out these functions effectively and efficiently.

Managerial competencies are “sets of knowledge, behaviours, skills, and attitudes which a person needs to be effective in the extensive range of managerial jobs and many types of organisations
