Types of summative assessment

Assignment:

Periodic large-scale standardized tests are comprehensive examinations. These are types of Summative Assessment. By definition, "a summative assessment is used for the purpose of documenting outcomes and judging value. It is used for providing feedback to instructors about the quality of a subject or program, reporting to stakeholders and granting agencies, producing reports for accreditation, and marketing the attributes of a subject or program." Periodic large-scale standardized test provides feedback about the quality and extent to which the student achieved the standards.

It does not only document the student performance, but also the quality of teaching, as well as that of the subject itself. Results of these tests may be used for the evaluation of teaching strategies used, the standardized tests itself and the content of the lesson.

What are your feelings about these tests? Should they hold so much weight when determining student achievement? How much responsibility should lie in the teacher if the student does not do well on the assessment? It always seems as though people want to blame the teacher for the student's shortcomings; however, we are only with the students for a few hours out of their day and the parents must be involved at home. What are your feelings about holding parents accountable? If I can possibly lose my job if a student has not met the standard then why can't a parent to be legally charged with neglect if their child can not read or write? What are your thoughts on this?
