Transmission problems on redundant core switches

While maintaining your company's configuration management it is determined that you need to upgrade your switches. After you evaluate the newer model switch on a pilot network you implement the full upgrade. A week after the upgrade it is determined that there are some transmission problems on one of two redundant core switches. You are pretty sure that it is either the transmission cable or NIC but you have not established a baseline for the traffic on the switches. What measurement(s) can help verify that this is truly the problem?
