Formal Report Assignment

Topic: Visual communication and graphic design: There's more to the message than the words themselves.  How do visuals (pictures, shapes, colours, fonts, logos) affect communication and audience perception? 

Report Format:

  • Follow the Business Report Style Guide in Moodle
  • 1.5 spacing, with an extra space between paragraphs
  • Times New Roman, 12 point font
  • In-text citations use APA Format
  • Reference Page uses APA Format

Outline:

  • Title Page (1 page)
  • Table of Contents (1 page)
  • Executive Summary (1 page maximum) - a short summary of all of the content of your report for readers who do not have time to read the whole thing.
  • Introduction (approximately 1/2 page) - introduces the overall topic and the subtopics that you will be discussing.
  • Body Content (8 pages maximum) - use informative, logical headings of your choice; may use subheadings under each heading (make sure heading formats are consistent at each level); paragraphs should be relatively short and well-structured; content should fit together logically; include in-text citations for ALL information, ideas, facts and quotations taken from an outside source.
  • Conclusion (approximately 1/2 page) - summarizes what you have said in a strong and definite manner; recaps the topic and subtopics.
  • References (1 page) - separate page; follows APA format as discussed in class; should include at least 5 sources that were used in your report.

Formatting:

  • Maximum length: 1500 words
  • APA format.
  • APA-style citations and reference

Oral Presentation

For your oral presentation, you will speak for 5 to 7 minutes about a single topic.  Your topic may relate to your formal report or it may be another topic with my approval.  You do not have to cover everything in your formal report.  Choose only the aspects that you think your audience will find interesting. 

You are required to use visuals (usually Powerpoint) to accompany your presentation. 

You will be evaluated on:

  • The principles of good public speaking that we have discussed in class.
  • The organization and content of your presentation.
  • The quality of your visual presentation (Are your slides free of grammar/spelling mistakes? Simple layout? Easy to understand?)

Keep in mind:

  • Any images that you use must be cited and referenced.
  • Do not feel that you have to cover all of the information included in your formal report. This is a short presentation, so you may narrow down your topic to fit the time limit.
  • You will probably want to give the presentation a different structure from the report itself.
  • Do not include too many Powerpoint slides. You may use as few as eight slides for your short presentation.
  • Aim for a flowing, natural speaking style. You should not be reading your presentation.
  • Practice ahead of time.

Assignment:

Your powerpoint will be uploaded onto Moodle and it will need to be annotated. That will be the oral part of the presentation.
