Essay - Literary Analysis of Short Fiction

For our short fiction literary analysis, choose as your topic one of the stories the class has read. Be sure the story is one that you understand fully in which you can identify significant use of three of the literary elements discussed (for example, tone, symbolism, and metaphor).  Essay should be a minimum of 1000 words, independent of quoted text.

Your thesis statement should include identification of those three literary elements as well as your expression of the story's theme, and the analysis itself will focus on demonstrating and explaining how those literary elements work together to create that theme you have described.

A very basic layout of the analytical thesis statement might look like this:

To review, Essay #1 requires:

  • A minimum of 6 direct quotations (with correct author/page number citation) from the story itself, correctly integrated and cited.

The essay should include a thesis statement, an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph in which the main ideas of the thesis statement are reiterated.
