To identify and analyze archetypes in an episode of The Twilight Zone called "The Howling Man"

Directions:

Before beginning this assignment, you must first complete this week's reading assignment and watch this week's PowerPoint presentation. (See Week 9 Overview for more information.)

With the principles of archetypal criticism in mind, carefully watch "The Howling Man." (See link in theWeek 9 module.)

Make a bulleted list of every archetype you see functioning in the story.  Remember, archetypes can include recurring characters (e.g., the suffering servant or the trickster) and plot types (e.g., the journey motif), as well as recurring symbols, settings, themes, etc.  Beside each archetype you list, please include a brief explanation of the archetype's significance in the story.

So, for example, one bullet on your list might look like this:

  • Thunderstorm archetype-the thunderstorm symbolizes [fill in the blank] and creates an atmosphere of [fill in the blank].
