What Do You Already Know About Writing?

This unit, in the Introductions thread, we will begin to get to know each other. There, you are asked to provide a metaphor or analogy for who you are as a writer. In this, your formal first writing assignment, you will expand on your writing metaphor to inform your writing teacher of what you already know about writing. The purpose of your writing this unit is to reflect on who you are as a writer and to set goals for the term. If you do a good job with this assignment, you will have a benchmark against which to compare yourself at the end of the term in your reflective essay, which will be included in your Portfolio in Unit Seven.

In your Reflective Introduction, due at the end of Unit One, please answer the question above: what do you already know about writing? To do this, consider describing your previous experience with writing, either in school, professionally, and/or in your personal life. Think about listing some of the rules, guidelines, standards, or processes you have learned about writing. You might think about evaluating the different types of writing advice you have received over the years, or explaining which kinds of writing instruction are most useful. You might also set personal learning goals for this term.

Finally, consider using this assignment to introduce me to any particular challenges you face when writing, writing issues or problems you have struggled with in the past, or anything I can do as your teacher to help you become the best writer you can be.
Length: Approximately 500 words (about 2 pages, double-spaced).
