Separation of a Mixture of Solids.

This experiment would have been more informative if errors in the experiment did not occur in both trials. The mass percentages calculated in both trials are far off from each other. Error occurred in the first trial because the total mass percentage of all three compounds did not add up and equal 100%. The mass percentage calculated of each compound were close the actual true values of the compounds; which were NH4Cl =30%, NaCl= 23%, and SiO2= 47%. Errors that could have occurred in this trial are that the evaporating dishes were not washed before use, and the water in the SiO2 dish did not completely evaporate out of the dish. The main error that occurred that threw off the calculation of the mass percentage in trial 2 was that the amount of NH4Cl that would have been sublimated could not be calculated, because the evaporating could not be heated up after using two different Bunsen burners. The company who is responsible for cleaning up the spill was determined, which is the company that was transporting SiO2.
