Assignment 1: Critique of theoretical and empirical basis for Universal Design
for Learning.

This Assignment requires you to review the theoretical literature and the empirical evidence derived from research which is the basis for Universal Design for Learning, and then apply these principles to your own field of practice.

LENGTH: 2000 WORDS EXCLUDING REFERENCE LIST
WHAT DO I NEED TO SUBMIT?

• Assignment - 2000 word essay with three parts plus references using APA referencing style.

ASSIGNMENT 1 DETAILS
In order to complete this assignment you need to use formal essay structure (introduction/ body (three
parts with subheadings)/ conclusion):

INTRODUCTION: (approximately 250 words.)
BODY:

Part A - UDL origins/ theory/ framework/ models. (approximately 500 words.)
• Universal Design for Learning is a research-based framework for teaching diverse groups and improving learning outcomes for all learners. It is a ‘how-to' response to inclusive standards for
participation under the Disability Standards for Education legislation (2005).
• Drawing upon at least five scholarly references, demonstrate an understanding of the UDL framework as it translates from architectural/ design origins to an educational concept, i.e. the history and rationale for UDL, and its application to inclusive learning settings.
• Summarise the UDL model/s (e.g. ‘Seven Pillars'/ ‘M2ECCA'/ ‘Building Blocks' etc.) which could relate to your own field of practice.

Part B - Empirical evidence/rationale for UDL. (approximately 500 words.)
• Critique the effectiveness of three examples of UDL in the research literature which could relate
to your own field of practice.
• Explain how evidence-based practice and/or practice-based evidence is/are central to UDL principles. What is the evidence that physical, cognitive, social-emotional and/or sensory barriers to learning are reduced by the application of UDL models ?
• Remember to carefully reference any assertions or observations you make in this section.

Part C - Application to your own field of practice. (approximately 500 words.)
• How can an understanding of UDL affect your pedagogy, i.e. educator behaviour and practice?
• Reflect on how UDL can be applied to your own field of practice. Discuss strengths and challenges, strategies and methods which demonstrate a critical and reflective examination of your own teaching practice and how you could plan to create a more flexible learning
environment.
CONCLUSION: (approximately 250 words.)

Assessment criteria:
• Analysis of recent and relevant literature to explore the origins and theoretical basis of UDL.
• Discerning selection and evaluation of relevant examples of UDL which demonstrate its empirical
basis.
• Critical and reflective appreciation of the integration of UDL principles into own teaching and learning field of practice.
• Correct use of current inclusive language, such as person-first and appropriate anti-bias language.
• Presents work professionally, with clear academic essay writing and within the word limit and uses APA referencing style correctly, including competently integrating evidence.
